Season 1[]

In Pour It Out: Maddie finalizes her divorce agreement with Bill, which occurred after he, a doctor, impregnated a nurse at his hospital and then proposed to her and planned to start a family with her), with her best friend Helen as her lawyer. She snaps at Bill when he demands to keep the house via his lawyer. It would be very hard for Maddie to have to find a new job and a new place to live while being a single mother of three kids at the start of the school year. However, Bill eventually lets Maddie and the children continue residing in the house. Later, her best friends Helen and Dana Sue propose they start a business together.

In A United Front: Maddie has accepted Helen and Dana Sue's invitation, and is getting back in the workforce as the co-owner of The Corner Spa. She also has a meeting with Ty's baseball coach about Ty's behavior at school. At first, Bill was going to attend the meeting too, but Ty didn't want to so her mother respected his wishes. Maddie is warned by Coach Maddox that Ty's grades are slipping rapidly and that if that and his behavior (mainly his fights at school with Jackson Lewis) continued Ty would lose his position in the starting lineup for the season. Maddie later attends one of Ty's baseball games, and is seemingly uncomfortable by Noreen being there with Bill, constantly being distracting by making supportive comments to Ty that are being heard by everyone and that embarrass Ty in front of his fellow teammates.

In Give Drink to the Thirsty: Maddie is so busy interviewing possible trainers for the spa gym that she forgets to pick up Ty from baseball practice. Maddie later attends another meeting with Cal about Ty's progress, this time with Bill present as well, where Cal tells Maddie and Bill that they're distracting Ty's game. Cal suggests that they alternate, and even though Bill doesn't like the idea he ultimately accepts. Maddie gives Ty the news and tells him that she won't attend the weekly, but her son doesn't take the news very well. Later, Maddie's sink breaks, and as she doesn't have Bill at home anymore she decides to call a plumber. However, all of them have been called by Helen to fix The Corner Spa's sewage system, so Maddie decides to call Coach Maddox, who she already calls Cal, instead. After a hot, wet and sweaty encounter, Maddie and Cal have a couple of flirty encounters, one of which Ty sees, causing him to storm off.

In Lay It All Down: things aren't going well for Maddie, as everyone is talking about Cal taking off his shirt on her driveway. She doesn't think there's anything wrong with being friends with him, even though Cal is clearly feeling uneasy about all the gossiping going around town. He tells Maddie that they would like to be more than friends. However, even though everyone including her mother thinks she should jump in, Maddie feels guilty as she doesn't think Ty's reaction will be a good one.

In Dance First, Think Later: Maddie's longtime nemesis, Mary Vaughn Lewis (who is also the mayor's wife and the mother of Ty's school nemesis, Jackson) purposefully causes a scheduling conflict that threatens the spa's opening day. However, Maddie decides not to fight back and the opening day goes on fine thanks to her mother's advertising tactics. Maddie later dances with Cal in front of everyone: it doesn't matter, because everyone already thinks they're together.

In All Best Intentions: Maddie is now officially in a relationship with Cal and open enough to be kissing in public. This means that Maddie, as promised, has told Ty, who isn't too thrilled about the news but ultimately decides to support his mother. Maddie is then asked for permission by Bill to ask the kids to participate in his and Noreen's wedding.

In Hold My Hand: Maddie signs her divorce papers, However, her problems now come from her relationship with Cal: there's a big baseball game coming up, and Jackson's parents claim that he isn't the one starting because of Cal's favoritism towards Ty, as he is the coach's girlfriend's son. It all gets resolved in a meeting between the Townsends, the Lewises, Coaches Maddox and Bixby, and the headmistress: Cal says he will let Harlan choose who starts for the game, and he agrees with Cal that Ty will start. However, Mary Vaughn then says that she will seek revenge on Cal and Maddie. Later Cal tells Maddie that her son is going to be a fine man, for reasons unbeknownst to Maddie.

In What Fools These Mortals Be: Without consulting Maddie, Bill arrives at Ty's baseball game with a brand new car for his eldest son, in front of the whole town. Maddie is furious about it and thinks that Bill isn't doing a good job at co-parenting: they don't make any decisions together. Bill later goes to Maddie's house, opens the garage without permission , and searches between his three kids' old toys. Maddie makes it clear to Bill his is no longer his home and asks him to return the house keys.

In Where You Find Me: Maddie feels guilty and pressured when Kyle disappears. Bill is doing everything he can to find Kyle, to Maddie's surprise, and they are forced into a tense partnership that Cal isn't thrilled to hear about. Kyle is revealed to be at church with Pastor June, feeling foolish and lonely. Maddie was heartbroken to hear the reasons for his vanishment, not knowing how she hadn't noticed his behaviour before.

In Storms and Rainbows: Cal attends his first Townsend family dinner. He later tells Maddie he loves her and that they should go away together, which sets the alarm bells ringing, as Maddie still doesn't trust herself to be open to him in the way that he deserves. Later, Cal asks Erik to help him with a surprise dinner for Maddie at the back of the Corner Spa, and she decides that she wants to move forward. However, Ty is getting scouted by Cal's friend, who has a good eye for talent and think Ty would be a fit for the Braves. Maddie wants Ty to go to college first and is very put out by how this has been handled around her. This leads to her and Cal's first proper argument. Maddie is seen at the car accident scene, worried about Ty, when it turns out that it was actually Kyle the one that had suffered the accident.
