Hold My Hand is the seventh episode of the first season of Sweet Magnolias.

Plot[]

Maddie's coziness with Cal causes complications, Helen fights for a mock trial student, Noreen receives a welcome visitor, and Erik bonds with Isaac.

Synopsis[]

Maddie finally signs the divorce papers officially. However, her problems now come from her relationship with Cal: there's a big baseball game coming up, and Jackson's parents claim that he isn't the one starting because of Cal's favoritism towards Ty, as he is the coach's girlfriend's son.

It all gets resolved in a meeting between the Townsends, the Lewises, Coaches Maddox and Bixby, and the principal: Cal says he will let Harlan choose who starts for the game, and he agrees with Cal that Ty will start. However, Mary Vaughn then says that she will seek revenge on Cal and Maddie. Bill doesn't as much luck as Maddie, as Noreen starts to feel insecure about her happiness and about her relationship with Bill when her younger brother Garth comes to town for a couple of days.

Meanwhile, Ty witnesses Mary Vaughn scolding Jackson for not starting in that day's baseball game, as she complains on how mad it makes her that her nephew Grant is a better player than Jackson and is having more success than him: her sister is constantly gloating about Grant. Ty decides to fake an injury so Jackson can start, and Cal, understanding what happened and why, tells Maddie that her son is going to be a fine man. Kyle doesn't like the news about Annie and Ty's kiss and becomes even more upset when his brother tells him that Annie's the one who kissed Ty and not the other way around.

At the Sullivan home, Dana Sue is unaware about Annie's drunken mishaps, even though everyone knows at school. However, Dana Sue sees a text message with suspicious emojis in Annie's phone and has a chat with Maddie and Ty, in which the latter snaps under the pressure and gives everything away. This leads to a huge rift between Dana Sue and Annie in which Dana Sue says that what makes her angriest is the fact that Annie lied to her and hid her the whole situation. Dana Sue grounds Annie, which makes Annie even angrier at Ty: she ghosts him at school, fortunately for CeCe. After Dana Sue gets home, she has an emotional conversation with her daughter and, despite her insisting that Annie can tell her anything, kissing Ty isn't mentioned.

Lastly, Helen is still handling the mock trials and receiving a bit of reluctance to join from CeCe. Helen finds an explanation to this when she meets CeCe's father, Russ, who is very traditional. He seems proud of his daughter, but only of the parts that most embody the family traits. After being convinced after a chat with Helen, Russ finally lets her daughter to attend the mock trials.

Erik goes for a walk on the forest with Isaac, where they talk about Isaac's birth and adoptive parents and about what he's looking for as an adult. It's also useful for Erik, who, back at Sullivan’s, opens up about how cooking allowed him to take control in his life after suffering loss. He tells Isaac not to give up on his dad (with whom he has a bit of a rift), and offers his company in case he needs it.
